О том, как проходили соревнования, рассказал руководитель Даугавпилсского клуба Stiga Янис Гайделис: "Победитель в группе “40-44 года”, где выступал Виктор, определялся по сумме результатов двух гонок. Первую, прошедшую 11 февраля, Виктор выиграл, обогнав на две минуты прошлогоднего чемпиона мира из Финляндии Антти Виртанена. Во второй гонке, 13 февраля, финн догнал Виктора, и они долгое время шли вместе. Но на последнем контрольном пункте финский гонщик ошибся и (хотя показал лучшее время дня) полностью восполнить дефицит времени не смог. По сумме двух гонок наш ориентировщик обошел соперника на 47 секунд и занял первое место. Время Виктора Лещева — 139:05 мин., у Антти Виртанена — 139:52 мин.
Виктор начал заниматься спортом в клубе Stiga, если мне не изменяет память, года с 1983-го. Семь раз он в составе сборной Латвии участвовал в чемпионатах мира и Европы среди элитных спортсменов. В составе эстафетной команды занимал 10-е место. Среди ветеранов Виктор стартовал в четвертый раз, с прошлого чемпионата мира, как известно, он привез бронзовую медаль. Он очень спокойный и целеустремленный человек — хороший пример для всех, кто приходит в наш клуб Stiga заниматься. Служит Виктор в полиции, майор".
